SAFF Cup 2013: Afghanistan Tops Group B with 3-1 win over Sri Lanka

The dream run of Afghanistan continues as the highest ranked SAFF team has thrashed Sri Lanka 3-1 after coming back from a 0-1 deficit.

Afghanistan earlier defeated Bhutan 3-0 and thus now has 6 points from 2 matches which places it on the top of the table. A later match between Maldives and Bhutan may change this though.

In the 35th minute of the match, Mohammed Fazal of Sri Lanka unexpectedly gave them the lead by chipping the ball over the goalkeeper. A chance came along for Afghanistan to equalize through penalty in the 54th minute when Mohammed Sameer handled the ball. But the shot of Belal Arezou was parried away by the diving keeper.

It took another 9 minute for the Afghan team to equalize when Mohammed Rafi’s corner shot sailed straight into the goal. Haroon Amiri gave them a lead when his shot found the net in the 77th minute of the game.

In the 87th minute, Hashmatullah rounded it off with with a goal from counter-attack. A 3-1 win has now booked a berth for the Afghans in the semi-final.
