I-League 2012-13 will have many new Indian faces

The rising cost of Indian and foreign players playing in India is making the Indian football clubs look to a new pool of players.

Many of the current I-league Clubs and those who have qualified recently are vocal about the sudden sky-high undeserving salary demands of the footballers. Top 20 Indian players start from  Rs 80 lakhs, 2nd rung are demanding upto 70 lakhs while even the third string players are demanding anywhere between 40-50 lakhs.

Clubs like ONGC, United Sikkim FC and Air India are finding it hard to hire ‘star’ players. So they have an alternate solution. The clubs are holding/going to hold camps in various regions of the country to scout new talents. This will not only be cost effective but also will bring new faces to increase the pool and thus rationalize the player salaries.

ONGC are keeping most of their squad that helped them qualify for the next I-league season with a slight hike in their salaries and promises of bonus. Depending on whether they will be based in Mumbai or Delhi, they will hire local talents from the respective city.

Air India has always depended on the unknown faces and each year they have managed to throw pleasant surprises. They will have a similar strategy for the next season.

United Sikkim FC are having a more ambitious program. They will travel through different cities in the country and hold selection camps there. The first one of them has already started in Kolkata with the help of East Bengal. The next camp will be held in Punjab as there are lot of budding players in that region who do not have a club owing to the closure of JCT. Their next destination would be Kerala and they are already in talks with local clubs to hire facilities.

The final phase of the selection trials will happen in USFC’s hometown Gangtok where the players will be shortlisted for inclusion in the team roster.
