The 124th edition of prestigious and historical Durand Cup is scheduled to start on 24th September and continue till 24th October 2011. Durand Cup is Asia’s oldest football Cup tournament. Not, only that, it has the prestigious distinction of being only the 3rd oldest tournament in the world after the English and the Scottish FA Cup.

Invitations Sent

Invitations for participation in the tournament has been sent to all the major football clubs in India including Mohun bagan, East Bengal, Churchill Brothers, Dempo and defending champions Prayag United (formerly Chirag United).

Mohun Bagan, East Bengal and Dempo to Skip

Like previous years, Mohun Bagan has decided not to participate in this edition of the Durand Cup too. They have written a letter to the Durand organizing committee in which they have stated that the ‘Defence Rule dating back to British Era’ prevents them from carrying normal sports activity in their ground and club-house during the period of 1-15th of October each year. As a mark of protest, they would not participate in the tourney.

East Bengal has committed for the BTV Cup in Vietnam during the same period while the reason for Dempo is unclear.

Prayag United confirms participcation

Prayag United SC (formerly Chirag United) have confirmed their participation in the Durand Cup 2011. They are the defending champions and would surely be aiming to retain their title. They will send a full strength team under the coach Mr. Sanjay Sen.

The Durand Cup Organizing Committee has also increased the prize money for Durand Cup and has in-fact doubled it.
